Shipley & Halmos

There were no complicated themes or inspiration stories. Instead, Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos focused on one basic question: "What's in a woman's closet?" If the designers have their way, it'll be their updates on classic fare, like a five-pocket silk "jean" or a leather and wool varsity jacket. The duo's past collections have had a tendency to be one-note, but here they wisely emphasized a range of versatile options. Sheer Breton shirts, a cool ankle-length silk trench, and chunky alpaca-knit sweaters looked wearable but had enough flair to pique a girl's interest—it's the sort of approach that some of the most successful young New York designers have been taking. With their latest effort, Shipley and Halmos are aiming to position themselves in that company.

The New Wavy Hairstyle

Hippie-inspired beach waves continue to dominate the red carpet, but at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, stylist Robert Vetica took curls a decade further. “It was ’70s-inspired, like Bianca Jagger–goes–to–Studio 54,” says the coiffeur about the hairdo Jennifer Lopez, his muse of the evening, wore. “I’m kind of over messy beach hair—I wanted to make a stronger statement by giving her hair style and shape. It had lots of curl and massive volume, with more width than height.”

In eschewing carefree 60s layers for Guy Bourdin–worthy curls, Vetica trimmed Lopez’s damp hair to one length (“When you blunt the hair it makes curls appear stacked and gives volume at the ends”). Next, he blew strands dry with a round brush to maintain hair’s buoyancy and fashioned a middle part. Misting a mild fixing spray, he then created spirals with a one-inch curling iron. Working from the back to the front on each side, he finger-brushed the set with
Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream (“It holds the wave and takes out any dryness from the curling iron”). For a va-va-voom finish, Vetica smoothed waves with a bristled brush and backcombed under each section using a wide-tooth comb. A healthy dousing of Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray (available next month) and Lopez’s head-turning do was complete.

Jonny Johansson's world has been invaded by droids. As the father of six- and three-year-old sons who are obsessed with The Clone Wars cartoons and collectible figures as only small boys can be, he shrugs, "We have to watch it and play it all the time. It's sort of embarrassing, but that's where my inspiration comes from—always close to home."

Not so embarrassing, actually, since the domestic goings-on at Johansson's house in Stockholm this winter happen to have landed Acne's Fall collection plumb in the center of Planet Fashion's current sci-fi-tinged fantasies. Led by Iris Strubegger, the models who flew into London for the show had spray-painted foreheads and greasy glitter around their eyes and stomped onstage wearing cartoonish boots with Lego-like soles, dressed like some postapocalyptic alien militia.

The vibe gave Johansson a formula to upgrade cool Nordic streetwear to a fashion level—drapey fatigues, banana-shaped pants with zippered ankles, jumpsuits, oversize sweaters, and scarves wrapped as hoods. The most outstanding piece: a rough-hewn patchworked, primitive-looking long-haired jacket that was a grunge-luxe upgrade of Acne's best-selling aviator shearling. It could easily be taken for fur, but as Johansson put it, "Nope. All sheep. They brush them these days."

Crayola is synonymous with crayons. Because of them crayons are one of the top 20 most recognizable scents for adults in America, and their brand is known to 99% of households.

Inspired by every color, from the original 8 color box to the 120 color trunk?, and the crayon connection shared by generations of people, Stephen Von Worley of Weather Sealed and his friend created the Crayola Color Chart, 1903-2010, A visual history of Crayola's color expansion from 1903 to 2010.

The True Colors Of Dinosaurs

"Scientists have found evidence of some of the original coloration of a dinosaur that lived about 125 million years ago, showing that it had rings of orange-brown bristly feathers around its tail."

Color has long been something that scientist thought would never be known about the dinosaurs. Since only hard tissues tend to be preserved in fossil records there was little hope in the scientific community that any of the colorful softer tissues would ever be studied. And without those how could we ever know what color palette any of these incredible creatures displayed. The answer came in a feather.

Recently discovered feathered dinosaurs held the key to our first look at color. Feathers, unlike soft tissue, are made of tough proteins and hold up much better. Unfortunately these fossilized feathers don't preserve the color they once had but rather look much like any other fossil.

"When you look at the feathers, you don't know what the colors were. The feathers are a mixture of brownish colors," says Benton (paleontologist Mike Benton at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom). "They're just preserved either as sort of dirty, whitish, beige kind of color and a kind of darker, equally dirty kind of brownish color. "

D.I.Y.: Proenza Schouler S/S 10

Though we never met a Proenza Schouler collection we didn't like, we were particularly taken by the designer duo's S/S 10 show. Drawing inspiration from the worlds of surfing and skating, the minds behind this cult label—fashion-world darlings Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez—created a high energy, fun, and tomboy-meets-girly presentation that was undoubtedly one of their very best. The creative pair experimented with pieces that were brilliantly tied and dyed, but kept the patterns and tailoring sporty and marvelously modern—not like the hippie-splattered pieces we remembered from day camp. The snug tops and flouncy, voluminous skirts were styled to perfection, and the technicolor neon palette felt decidedly of-the-moment. In fact, our hearts were aflutter when we first set our eyes on the Tie-Dyed Long-Sleeve Shirt ($375), the Sleeveless Tie-Dyed Mini Dress ($2760), and the Cowl-Back Mini Dress ($1520), as they are the ideal way to sweep some much-needed sunshine into our winter wardrobe!

I am fascinated walking around flea markets finding doubles of seemingly unique, though often useless objects I have already purchased at another flea market. Despite the fact that I did not have any use for them even the first time, the desire to own two of these objects becomes too strong to resist. The unique and unknown origin of the object increases my desire to want the double – the unlikelihood of this sensation repeating itself produces an attraction that is too strong to resist.

Warning Colors

Warning colors are found throughout nature: the bumblebee, the skunk, the cuddle fish, the coral snake,... These animal's bright colors stand out against their environment demanding attention and declaring to predators that they're poisonous and they better think twice about eating them. So, its no wonder that when we want to get people's attention and warn them about certain perils we use the same high contrast, highly visibile, conspicuous color palettes that are often found in nature.
